The epidermis, the top layer of the skin, produces large amounts of keratin, a protein that helps give the skin its rigidity and elasticity. The epidermis is avascular (does not contain blood vessels) and has to rely on the dermis, the second layer of skin, for oxygen to survive. During the aging process, our skin looses elastic fibres from the dermis, and nutrients do not diffuse through to the epidermis as regularly. Additionally, the subcutaneous skin tissue (hypodermis) diminishes, causing the skin to wrinkle and sag.

Treatment course

The facial acupuncture works in time by stimulating and rejuvenating the dermis. As such, for optimal results, at least 10 treatments over the course of 5 – 10 weeks are necessary. Older people or heavy smokers may wish to consider at least 12 treatments.
